Melnik is located in a mountainous area in the southwestern foothills of Pirin Mountain. It is located in a picturesque area 22 km southeast of the town of Sandanski at 437 meters above sea level. The climate is transitional Mediterranean with summer minimum and winter maximum rainfall. The average annual rainfall is about 670 mm. The Melnik River flows through the town, a left tributary of the Struma. The Rozhen Monastery is 7 km away. For nature lovers there is a direct path that passes through the natural phenomenon Melnik Pyramids. Melnik is also a starting point for Pirin hut and Malina hut.
