Staro Tarnovo and Tsarevets Hill reveal their beauty through their green clothes. But the greenery cannot hide the ocher and the blue, the breath of the past. The uniqueness of the present.
The object of admiration for centuries, and until now in the hill Tsarevets lives the magical magic of our stories.
The hill has been inhabited since the 3rd millennium BC. In the V-VII century AD. here was the largest city of the Byzantine Empire in the province of Lower Moesia - Zikideva.
In the 9th century an old Bulgarian settlement appeared here, which grew rapidly. The construction of the fortress wall, which is preserved to this day, began in the XII century. The wall is 1100 m long, in places up to 3.40 m thick and over 10 m high.
The fortress had three entrances, which can still be seen today. The main entrance, which was defended by towers, is located to the west. The second entrance is the so-called Small gate (Assen's) and is located on the northwestern fortress wall. The third entrance - the Frankhisar Gate, is at the southeastern end of the fortress and was guarded by a battle tower. This tower is known as the Baldwin Tower, named after the Latin Emperor Baldwin of Flanders, captured at the Battle of Edirne in 1205 by King Kaloyan. Legend has it that after the battle Baldwin was imprisoned in this tower, where he later died.
In the central part of the fortress is located the palace complex - several buildings surrounded by an inner stone wall, two battle towers and two entrances. It includes a throne room, a palace church and royal rooms.
