Veleka springs on Turkish territory through many karst springs near the village of Kovchaz. In Turkey, the river flows into an extremely forested basin and crosses the Bulgarian-Turkish border about 500 m from the village of Moriane.
In its upper course to the village of Zvezdets Veleka flows in a narrow deep valley with a very large in places longitudinal slope (up to 33% units), which at the hydrometric station near Zvezdets is already significantly smaller (4% units). The slopes of the valley are steep (up to 50 °) and completely forested with tall forests: oak, maple and others.
